Frequently Asked Questions

❓ What does a doula do?

A doula is a trained professional who provides non‑medical support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Their role is to help families feel informed, comforted, and empowered throughout the journey.

  • Emotional support – offering reassurance, encouragement, and a calming presence.

  • Physical comfort – using techniques like massage, positioning, and breathing guidance to ease labor.

  • Information & education – helping families understand options and make confident decisions.

  • Advocacy – supporting communication between parents and medical staff.

  • Consistency – staying with you throughout labor, unlike medical staff who may rotate shifts.

❓ Can a doula support cesarean or medicated births?

Absolutely. Doulas provide emotional and physical support in all birth settings—whether your journey involves a cesarean, an epidural, or other medical interventions. Our role is to help you feel calm, informed, and cared for, offering comfort measures, advocacy, and reassurance so you and your family feel supported no matter how your birth unfolds.

❓ What happens at prenatal and postpartum visits?

Prenatal visits are about preparation and planning. We’ll talk through your birth preferences, practice comfort techniques, and answer questions so you feel ready and empowered. Postpartum visits focus on gentle support after baby arrives—this may include newborn care guidance, feeding support, emotional check‑ins, and helping your family adjust to new rhythms. These visits are tailored to your needs, ensuring you feel nurtured during this transition.

❓ Do doulas attend hospital births?

Yes. Many hospitals welcome doulas as part of the birthing team. While doulas are not medical staff, they provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support alongside doctors, nurses, and midwives. Policies can vary by hospital, so it’s always best to check with your provider and facility about their guidelines.

❓ How does a doula work with my partner?

Doulas support partners too. We help them feel confident, involved, and connected throughout the process. Whether it’s guiding them in offering hands‑on comfort, suggesting ways to encourage you, or simply giving them space to rest while we stay by your side, our goal is to strengthen your team. A doula doesn’t replace your partner’s role—we enhance it, making sure both of you feel supported.

Testimonials

Marissa Cole, MO

"I have ordered several prenatal and postpartum meals from Shash and Kathaleen always knocked it out of the park. I can tell that she prepares the meals and snacks with such love and care because everything was so fresh and delicious. I had somewhat of a sensitive stomach during my pregnancy, but the foods never upset my stomach.

The meals and snacks I tried were spinach salad, nut butter cups, tepary bean hummus plate, and blue corn muffins"

Tiffany West, MO

"I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Kathaleen and Shash Necessities at multiple events. Their presence is truly essential to our community, and they consistently go above and beyond—supporting not only their clients but the broader community as well."
